::omiyage*::
A couple of friends went to Hawaii for a vacation last week. I was happy for them but a little bitter. Why should they get to go? They wouldn’t appreciate delicacies like the Spam musubi and chicken long rice!** They would probably drive right past the lunch wagon without noticing. Who would direct them to the ono-est okazuya? They’d just pay the fee to get into Haunama Bay without being a little indignant because it used to be free (and a lot cleaner).
But before they left, I gave them a brief explanation of omiyage. I’m not sure what omiyage means literally, but in Hawaii the term is loosely translated to: “Eh, brah, you going Big Island? Go bring us back some omiyage.” I think it means “gift” but “snacks” is probably closer in this context. Anyway, they actually came through! They brought back some arare (Jade brand from 7-11 no less. That’s pretty Hawaii-kine, right?) and chocolate covered macadamia nuts and coffee and a pair of rubbah slippahs (Chris’ request).
*I apologize for being too lazy to link. Non-Hawaii folks may have to google unfamiliar terms if they’re curious enough.
**Grrrr. Just thinking of Hawaii food makes me forget about my trying not to eat meat. I’m really trying. I’ve cut back a lot already.

you know if you need a care package, just holler.
A trip to Hawaii sounds great right about now. I could never give up meat entirely. During my pregnancy, I couldn’t stand meat, but that went away. I actually had to start taking iron supplements because I was anemic. The baby was leeching all the iron from me and probably everything else.
Well, I am not sure that Spam is really meat, so you might be ok there
I should do a post on the veggie thing, because its going really well for me (and B too, he jumped on the band wagon as well) – eating out is a little harder, but I am not a picky eater, which would be hard in addition to being a veggiehead. I also like to cook, which helps. We have had some great luck with veggie meat- we made “chicken” tacos the other night that were better than real chicken. I am also taking a multi-vitamin, which should help with the iron issue. Not sure if I will eat fish still…not sure why I would given my reasoning, but still – no sushi? Gah!
